I think the key difference is the price. By the time you get the switchbot and contact / tilt sensor, it’s more expensive than the ratgdo, without having all the features.
Also, there’s a certain elegance in the ratgdo that switchbot will never have… Because sticking a switchbot above the opener button just looks janky and there’s no way around that. It’s ok if it’s the only option, but IMO, there must be no other option.
Genie (Alladin Connect) has officially stated that they have no intention of closing their API and plan to continue supporting independent integrations. Of course they could change their mind any time, but at least they have a clear policy and are on the record so it would look foolish to change course anytime soon.
They claim “third party apps like HA cause over half of their server load”? This is complete BS! I have Cisco Umbrella which provides me a report on how often devices on my network “phone home” each day. On average the other devices make about 30 to 50 requests per day to their respective servers. Around once per hour or so. Even my Echo devices aren’t very chatty. The MyQ gateway makes over 2200+ each day! When I first saw it, I thought something was wrong with it but some searching on the Umbrella forums told me this was normal for a MyQ box. If they were really concerned about server load, they’d fix their protocol! I couldn’t imagine why it would need to check in so many times per hour.
I’m lucky, I have a Go Control GD00Z-8-GC I installed before I found HA, which still works. I switched to the HA integration because the GD00Z beeps for a few seconds before opening or closing the door, and the HA integration didn’t. I did have to make the “fix” to get it it work with my opener which involved soldering a small jumper wire between two points on the circuit board, but it was pretty easy, and I have zero soldering skills! Lol! If you end up with one, a quick Google search will find the fix and how to apply it. I’ll live with a few seconds of beeping to have complete local control.
However, the INSTANT my opener fails, I’ll be switching to Genie, or whoever allows HA or local control at the time. The decision makers at Chamberlain apparently need to learn the hard way how to make the right decisions. The best way is to vote is with your wallet!
I took my wall remote (battery operated) off the wall and figured out the contacts to solder using a copper wire. I have ordered another wall remote and a relay. I will need a contact sensor to know the state of the gate as well. I am trying to figure out how to integrate the relay and the contact sensor into one and use as gate cover entity on HA
RatGDO is a much better solution for LM/Chamberlain doors, the additional info and status is worth twice the cost. I doubt the hack approach will save much if anything after adding in the contact sensors, and is certainly more trouble.
I have both Genie and Chamberlain openers. The Genie’s use relays and contact sensors. It is a primitive solution in comparison.
If it weren’t for this fiasco, I would likely replace the Genie openers just to get the ratgdo functionality. RatGDO is that much better IMO.
Thanks for that link. I ended up buying a set and they are awesome! I’m no longer worried I’ll break the hatchback on my car with the auto close on the garage door.
Its a shame it has come to this. Before the announcement I decided to find a workaround that I could manage. I have five garage doors, so a hardware solution and/or replacement garage door openner really wasn’t my first choice. I realized I never really used HA to actually control my garage doors (rarely), but rather just used the openning/closing triggers to control other automations. I already had/used YoLink for water leaks and temperature sensors around the house and low and behold they now have a garage door sensor. This seemed like the easiest solution for me and I am happy to report that all five sensors are working within my HA automaitions just fine. I reccomend those that just need to know the state of their covers check out the YoLink solution. It worked for me.
I tested tonight. A stack just a hair under 7 inches was detected at the center and about 6 in from the sensor bar. A stack of 6 inches was not detected.
For anyone who has deleted their MyQ account: How long did it take?
I’ve had a pending request to have my account deleted for over a week now. I’ve just asked for an update on the situation, but I’m wondering what the experience has been like for others.
That’s an interesting question. I just deleted the openers and then removed the app, but I guess I do have an account somewhere. Since they moved it from the web – HOW did you delete it?
I have done my part. I tweeted complaints to their announcement calling them out, left a 1 star review on the app store along with explanation and promise to remove it if they reverse course, and ordered a ratgdo. I do like to peek in on my built in camera from time to time, but no longer will give myq continuous access to my system. I will shut off internet access to the Chamberlain from my router and only turn it on for the rare occasion I need to peek in my garage.
it is really too bad. I was using HA’s REST API so that I could open/close my garage from my swipe down notification on Android. That is super convenient when walking the dog. I also miss having every hue bulb flash when the garage is open or closed. It is a really nice and quiet garage door whose only blight is being part of the myq ecosystem.
