Theben DU 1 S RF KNX control from HASS

I have an ABB router that doesn’t do secure, but its twister pair bus has a Theben TP-RF media coupler that should be able to do the unsecure–secure message framing.

And I’ve a problem:

  • If I send Group Switching message from ETS6, those Theben DU 1 S RF actuators change state and work just fine.

  • Once I send the same group message from HASS, I can see the messages in ETS Diagnostic sniffer, but the actuator does not change its state.

  • I hooked another, wired actuator to the same TP-bus and configured it. When HASS sends a Group Switching message only inside unsecure TP-bus, it works. Also the state_address messages come back and all is instantanious.

So the RF-media is somehow problem from when HASS controlled. In my understanding, the ‘secure’ icons and settings in Device listing are only for comissionin/downloading, not the actual payload. I would assume that RF-messages are always encrypted.

Those problematic Group messages are yellow in Diagnostics, any idea what that might indicate?

Any idea what might be wrong with this setup?

Well, I found the solution (and lights are on now, I’m not sitting in dark anymore :slight_smile: )

In Devices, the Theben TP-RF Parameters must be set to

Routing TP->RF: Group telegrams: Route

in both directions. By default they’re Filtered.

So the answer is yes, IP-router and TP-media can be unsecure and only RF-media is secure encrypted with media coupler.

Now when I send the same Group telegrams from HASS, they’re white and blue, not yellow anymore. So apparently it was cause by that filtering. There were brown lines as well, neither is apparently good thing.

This was probably a filter-table issue. See following posts if you want to learn how to configure the installation so you can set it to “Filtered” again: Implementation KNX dimming actor under HA - #19 by Dujith

I neee to check that.

Is it just me or all these KNX.org instructions like this that fails to explain the theory of given topic? Why those filters exist in the first place, what are they used for? I’m guessing to reduce traffic, but are these explained somewhere?

It’s a load control measure. Maybe you can find more infos here https://www.knx.fi/doc/esitteet/KNX-Basics_en.pdf
