Hi all, a UK specific query. I have Virgin media internet and it is sh*t, very variable speed, relatively frequent internet blackouts, rubbish customer service. I do however have excelllent 4G reception and actually get faster speeds on my iPhone over 4G than I do via Virgin fibre optic.
I am considering switching from Virgin to a 4G dongle/router type service for internet, and would like to know if anyone has experience with this and HASS? Is port forwarding possible?
Cheers
You’d need to ensure you used a provider that allocated you a routable IP address if you wanted remote access with port forwarding, and I don’t believe any of them provide that in their standard offering. Some of the more business focussed providers may have an option.

So long as you have a box on the outside (VPSes are cheap!) you can tunnel from your home router to the VPS.
Here, for example, using OpenVPN:

We have two 4G dongles (one Vodafone, one EE) attached to a TP-Link wdr3600 router running OpenWRT which does per-connection load balancing (with mwan3) so even if one 4G connection goes down the tunnel can reconnect over the other.
