VMWare Workstation 14 - VMDK

Good Morning,

Is there any chance to create a VM with the new .VMDK file?
every try is lose

Where are you having problems? I use ESXi and create Ubuntu server VMDK files for Home Assistant. It has worked very well.

itā€˜s dosenā€˜t start the os with vmware workstation 14

I too have HassOS running in ESXi (6.5).

Few things I had to do in order to get ti working correctly:

  • OS Family: Linux 64 bit
  • Network: E1000
  • SCSI: IDE
  • Boot: EFI

Iā€™m running on Vsphere 6.5 and my VM is using the settings-

Ubuntu Server 17.10
LSI SAS Controller
VMXNET3 NIC
USB passthrough to an Aeotec ZStick

Hello,

I am running ESXI 6.0 but can not get hassio to work with the 1.7 .VMDK file.
I have the messageā€¦no operating system found when the machine boots.
I have found an older 1.5 OVA file which I can use and upgrade but I want to start from the new build 1.7 system.

Can the people who managed to get the 1.7 version elaborate a bit on how they managed to get it running?
Zarthan or jmart518 perhaps?

Thanks

Hschroyen

Do you start with EFI?
Change from BIOS to EFI

Hi and thanksā€¦
So indeed for those looking into it one has to ā€œdeep diveā€ into the settings and look for boot options settings and change it to EFI. I also had to convert the image like /usr/sbin/vmkfstools -i /vmfs/volumes/datastore1/hassos_ova-1.7.vmdk /vmfs/volumes/datastore1/hassos_ova-1.71.vmdk

Butā€¦now the next problem :frowning:
I am now stuck at this image

Any suggestionsā€¦?

@hschroyen - did you find a solution? I am stuck at the same point.

What OS System did you select?

Hi,

As far as I understood it is a disc image so no need to select an OS>
The only thing I can do so far is to sroll in the menuā€™s but I cannot select anything.

Soā€¦we need help

Anyone able to solve this?

Thanks

hschroyen

I misunderstood the original post when I first responded. This is the HASSOS VMDK rather than a standard VMDK created by ESXi or Workstation. The downloaded VMDK is not really a complete virtual machine. That VMDK is missing a separate OVA file which includes instructions for importing into a virtual host like ESXi. It cannot be used as is. It can be converted but not sure what needs to be done to get it to work.

Hi hschroyen,

i faced the same issue as you do. After trying different configs in guest machine, at least with my following setup, i am able to boot hassio with esxi6.5+hassos1.8. hope it helps.

btw, i am still struggling with network problem. but anyway, it is a progress.

Thanks all for the feedback and help.

I have solved it following this link
https://github.com/home-assistant/hassos/issues/102

After installing 1.5 I did the upgrade to 1.8
However it should be nice if we could use ova or vmdk immediate, so if anyone finds a solution please step in.

Regards

Hschroyen

I simply set hardware compatibility one step down to esxi 6.5 instead of workstation 14 and now its booting fine past the boot menu. With this set to workstation 14 it stopped at the menu.
Off course I also set bios to uefi

where is this option in vmware Workstation 14?

What your looking for is this screen when creating your custom virtual machine. By default this is set to VMware Workstation 14 and should be changed to ESXi 6.5

When i add the disk i have this ā€œerrorā€;

grafik

Has this vmdk been used earlier or is it a freshly downloaded version?
Maybe redownload the vmdk and try again?

I got around this in VMWare Fusion by choosing disk type IDE instead of SCSI - it then just worked

how do you guys setup a static IP in esxi
my router doesnt support mac reservation,
