Voice PE with external media player to answer?

Hi there,

Just ask myself if there is an easy way to use an already existant media player for playback/sound of the voice PE.
I want to replace sonos assistants basically and still use them as speakers.

I think it depends on how you’re using your voice assistant. If you use custom sentences and intents, TTS responses can be played through any integrated media player.

But I’d rather love to configure a media player to answer on for whatever I ask it. Does that make any sense?

It does, but…

I don’t know much about Voice PE, but I’m pretty sure it will be acting as a kind of voice client tailored to HA - which means responses to voice commands can only be handled by the Voice PE itself.

You might be able to go to Settings | Voice Assistants and specify some other text to speech engine, such as Amazon Polly, or PicoTTS if you want to keep it local. If you can do that, you should be able to play TTS responses on your Sonos speakers. However, you will have to define every command and response yourself with custom sentences and intents.

If you’ve already got a Voice PE it might be worth a try.

You’re right, that should be possible.
What I was also thinking about is the fact that it lowers the volume of it’s own speaker when you “wake” it - from my POV it would be perfect if there was a “shortcut” that defines an “alternative output” which is then treated as if it was it’s own speaker.

I don’t think it’s really an edge case because many people already have the speakers, amps, sonoses etc and just want to add a decent assistant.

I agree. I’m one of them.
