Waterproof / outdoor Contact sensor recommendations

any photos of how it looks printer and with the sensors in?

I’ve installed these in July and it’s almost end December now. Both the one is the bathroom (that can get very wet → teenagers showering) and outside with rains, freezing, etc. have survived perfectly so far.

This looks great.

Question… What is this part? Looks solid.

That’s a base for the magnet part of the sensor to be placed on if I see it right. Depending a bit on if you need it or not. The one I originally found came in 2 parts: 1 the case for the actual sensor to make it waterproof and 2. a base you can also put the magnet part on if you need to ‘lift it’ to be in contact with the sensor in the case.

Definitely not the cheapest one, but certified as IP45 + CR123A battery which should last 5 years, small magnet, and spacers included.

Thanks for all the good ideas on here!
i’ve just ordered the Aqara contact sensor and the waterproof enclosure linked above. I’ll let you know in the coming days how it goes.
I had previously bought the Yale outdoor contact sensor as it has an impressive 200m range, IP 65 rating and said it works with Philips Hue which was going to be my Zigbee way to get it to talk to Home Assistant. Unfortunately, it won’t pair with Hue without purchasing additional hardware from Yale, which wasn’t clear on the website - just an FYI!

For those who haven’t seen it, here’s a great resource for those hunting for the right zigbee product. I haven’t searched through the list of products for outdoor contact sensors, but this list is a great place to start.

I conformal-coated the case seams (not the internal electronics) on an Aqara Zigbee door sensor and it worked fine outside in the weather on an external gate for a number of months before I repurposed it. Got some conformal coating on the pairing button - don’t do that - it was a pain to dig around the button and get it functional again so I could repair after I changed a setting in HA and broke Zigbee briefly.

Ikea parasoll zigbee sensors are ip44. I’m going to try one for the garden gate.

This is the correct answer

How did you get on with this? Few months in now. Any issues?

No issues, 2 others I had to restart because they became unavaileble but the outdoor one works flawless.

Are you sure? In the manual they say that “The sensor is for indoor use only and can be used in temperatures ranging from 0ºC to 45ºC.”

Meanwhile, Customer Service says that it can be used outdoors…

Still going strong since August. It has been wet since.

There’s also this. But if the battery runs out after the claimed 10 year battery life you need a new one, and I’m not sure about compatibility:

These seem good but how do sensors work when they are not a clear front and full plastic? Also would the new type of Aqara Sensors fit in them?

Every contact sensor I’ve had uses magnets so the opacity of the case doesn’t matter.

I have found the case does matter with the Aqara Motion Sensors P1 with doing what tom_l mentioned to do. ( The magnet has no problem working through the extra plastic)

On me testing this the sensor does not work inside the case! The case is a sourcingmap 100x68x50mm Electronic Waterproof IP65 Sealed ABS Plastic DIY Junction Box Enclosure Case Clear and the Material Plastic, Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene.

So not sure if its the case or the sensor but the sensor works outside of the case, but due to the Medium sensitivity setting set onto it and I cannot seem to be able to change it to a highest sensitivity setting range I cannot get the distance of 7 meters from it making the path lights useless to come on after you have passed them!

Can you set the Aqara Motion Sensors P1 higher in Home Assistant or do they have to be in Aqara App?

Contact sensors are of no use either they fail in the home let alone on an outside gate that is always left open!

The way I’m thinking is going to be best but not sure how unless I need a different Plastic for it to go through it better and some how chaning the medium sensitivity setting to a higher one in HA

This thread and your replied to comment all refer to contact sensors. If you’re looking for a solution for motion sensors, it would be best to start a new thread.
