WiFi inline switch

Hi guys.

I’m looking to make some lamps around my house a little smarter, but to meet the wife approval they still need to have a manual switch.

One saving grace is that they have an inline switch, rather than a switch on the lamp itself. A sonoff basic fits the bill, but it’s not the nicest looking thing. Are there any other options?
I was contemplating playing with a wemos d1 mini but seems a bit of a waste when I’ve already got 240v power on hand.

TIA!

If you intend to do inwall installations have a look at Shelly.
It’s Tasmota compatible and mine are working flawless since I got them half a year ago.

Not in wall no - not this time around. I’ve actually got some sonoff t1s with tasmota in wall already.

Flash your favourite flavour of alternative firmware with Tuya-convert

Thanks for the suggestion, but not what I’m after. I’ve got a bunch of WiFi enabled plugs around the place I could use, but that doesn’t achieve what I want it to.

It needs to inline on the cable, to replace the current switch. Exactly like a sonoff basic but more aesthetically pleasing so it passes the WAF. I think im probably going to end up using a sonoff basic and coming up with my own switch and housing, but just wondering if there is a better alternative.

Ie a direct replacement for something like the below:

What so a switch on the wall plug is not enough? It has to be further down the cable?

Yeah the power point is in a not easily accessible spot. It’s for bedside lamps.

Understood.

What about an in wall device along with a separate button to turn it off and on? eg a Xiaomi button?

Oh that’s actually not a bad idea. Will keep it in my back pocket.

You could always get a different case printed for the Sonoff to make it look a little better? (Plenty on Thingiverse)

Also keep in mind that it really needs to be put in an enclosure with proper strain relief. Like this:

That’s what I’ve done. Works very well.

I replaced the rocker switches with Sonoff SVs (bulbs are 12V MR16s) in 3D printed cases painted silver to match the cord. The switch on the SVs is accessible–and looks decent–for direct control if needed but is normally hanging hidden behind each bedside table.

The bedside tables are glossy white cubes, so Aqara wireless switches blend right in to control the lights. On/off feels instantaneous using zigbee2mqtt.

Do the Xiaomi buttons pair with a regular zigbee controller without the Xiaomi hub or do you need to use zigbee2mqtt?

I use zigbee2mqtt, have never tried to pair with regular controller.

ok thanks.

It wouldn’t be a big deal to switch all of my zigbee stuff over to zigbee2mqtt. I have all of the stuff I need to do it and even have a flashed tested/working controller that I was going to try a while back but never completed the switch. Now I just have it as a backup in case my regular one dies.

I guess I could hook it up to my old HA RPi and just use it as an MQTT node to send the signals to my current HA on the NUC.

Hmmm… that could work.

Or plug it into your nuc?

I wonder if two zigbee radio’s that close together would cause interference with each other? I’ve heard of people having problems with wifi AP’s too close to their zigbee2mqtt controllers causing issues.

That is exactly my setup. Xiaomi zigbee plug and button.
Added benefit, single click toggle the light on the same side of the bed, long press toggle ceiling light, double click switches off all light. Includes desk, wardrobe and ensuite light.

I am moving from Xiaomi hub to zigbee2mqtt. But at the moment I use both. The Xiaomi hub, rpi zero with z2m and google wifi puck are all sitting next to each other on a shelf. No issues so far…
