WTH where is smart energy?

We have all the necessary components to create a more efficient home. We can monitor the power usage of all devices, access weather forecasts, and view grid prices and control device like thermostats, heaters and EV charging stations. Why don’t we have a machine learning network that can optimize when to turn on the heater (preheat) when the price is low and when cold weather is approaching? We can also turn on the water heater when the price is low and based on usage.

Could we simply use GitHub - FlexMeasures/flexmeasures: The intelligent & developer-friendly EMS to support real-time energy flexibility apps, rapidly and scalable. as an add-on, create an integration that communicates with devices based on sensors in Home Assistant?

It would be fantastic to simplify the Home Assistant energy management features without creating excessive automations.

imagine… Just a slider with between comfort and energy savings.

I’ve come across numerous discussions about energy, and I believe it’s time we dedicate some time to exploring potential solutions. Many individuals are eager to gain more detailed insights into their energy usage. In my opinion, Home Assistant should incorporate an energy management system. Alternatively, we could explore open-source projects or even build our own solution.

By leveraging Home Assistant, we can significantly assist a large number of users in gaining a deeper understanding of their home’s energy consumption. This knowledge can empower users to take proactive steps, such as adjusting their usage patterns to coincide with cheaper energy hours.

Let’s transform Home Assistant into a reliable and efficient workhorse. It already meticulously collects all the data, and it offers standardized protocols for controlling various devices’ settings, such as adjusting the temperature or turning them on and off. We should aim to enhance Home Assistant’s intelligence and enable it to autonomously handle its tasks. By doing so, we can save money and enjoy greater comfort. (We shouldn’t create overly complex automations that can be easily accomplished by a machine learning network.)
