Zigbee2mqtt: getting rid of your proprietary Zigbee bridges (Xiaomi, Hue, TRADFRI)

Hello people and good Easter!
I think I have the same problem as many using zigbee2mqtt and home assistant, the pair\unpair of the Xiaomi devices and Ikea devices.
I have 1 CC2531 Coordinator, 1 CC2531 Router and 10 Xiaomi Plugs as Routers… As endpoints there’s more then 50, from Xiaomi to Ikea. It’s like a jungle where there’s no rules, every router and endpoint does whatever they feel like and you know what happens next… They work when they feel like it usually…
The question, the real question is:

What’s the best Coordinator, Router setup for the zigbee network using zigbee2MQTT?

Here’s a vision of my network:

Nightmare.

Thanks.

Hi,

For performance improvement you could skip the CC253x coordinator and go with CC26X2R1 or CC1352P-2 (haven’t been able to order this one on aliexpress). I’m unsure about using CC253x router for larger areas (mine is 100 sqm) as I only use a CC26X2R1 placed centrally for the last 8 months (instead of 1 CC2531 coordinator and 3 CC2531 routers that kept bugging when routes changed with less than 30 devices).

Current network includes 86 devices and works without a glitch (only Xiaomi, I’m unsure if adding different brands will affect reliability).

30 min after my last scan:

Where’s the best place to get that CC26X2R1? Europe, not china
Thanks.

Still quite expensive :frowning:

Was expecting for a price drop but there aren’t many commercial integrations.

Any addons needed? Box, Antenna, Module?

Any changes on the zigbee2mqtt that prevents the Xiaomi Routers to get endpoints, seems that only the Ikea Light, Router CC2531 and the Coordinator are getting endpoints…
I’m using the DEV version.

Nightmare

It depend what you want

I have the CC1352P-2 and got also antenna (improved the range but not as much as I hoped) plus I got 3D-printed case, but that’s not critical component

So far I am not using it in real. I made few tests and got noticably better range. But to switch from multiple CC2531s to single CC1352 I am waiting to have heating season finished. Do not want to break working setup right now.

I had not heard of the CC1352 previously so I looked it up on Aliexpress. I found this intriguing device

CC1352 and CC26X are quite the same devices. CC1352 dev board has na option to use external antena.

The device from AliExpress is somehow ready to use already. For Zigbee2mqtt you need supported controllers, which is the plain dev board from TI. So far I am not aware for CC1352/CC26X for any non-TI alternative. That’s why it is so expensive - similar to original TI CC2531 (50 EUR at Mouser)

CC26Xn certainly works for zigbee2mqtt.

I was wondering if the device on aliexpress might offer some other way into zigbee, but it is entirely unclear to me what is actually sent out eh ethernet port.

Does anyone know whether CC2531 version with an external antenna exist and work with z2m?
i just spotted one on ebay, it says it is 2531, not 2540, but it can be wrong.

i have a couple of remote sensors which won’t comfortably reach my cc2531 gateway, but if there is a version with an antenna it would be much easier.

It works, I bought mine on aliexpress, but don’t get your hope up to much. It is only a little bit better then the one without antenna. I eventually changed to a CC2530 connected to an esp01.

thanks! i was wondering how much better it would be, so probably not worth it then. i just need a backup stick so though i’d buy one of those.
Could you tell me a bit more about CC2530 with esp01, please? it sound like something i could use.
I already have a cc2530 and a ESP8266 which i bough out of interest but never got to use and i didn’t know it was possible to marry the two until today  is it more/less stable than cc2531? assuming the range would be better that that of 2531 due to the antenna, or also about the same?
Would it work with the z2m database from 2531, or would i have to pair all devices again?

Just yesterday while reading this topic i realised that there is also CC26X but it is a bit pricey and i’m still not sure how far i want to go into z2m as i had a bit of a hard time with it before (after i connected a bunch of Ikea lights/routers and the whole zigbee network went crazy). Now i only have a few devices on z2m stick, mostly round Xiaomi buttons that can only support 3/4/5 click when connected via z2m but not the native hub. It is about the time for me to rebuild my entire HASS setup as it is pretty old and carried over too much junk from older versions (bad automations, dodgy groups, lost devices etc, gui glitches etc) so i am revisiting my options around Zigbee integration once again.
As much as i’d love to replace all 4 of my zigbee hubs with one, seems like it gets too fragile when you go over a couple of dozen devices in the network, especially when the are many routers.
I understand CC26X has a lot more brains than 2531 or 2530, but still no external antenna and probably will still have a hard time with multiple routers. so probably 2530 with an ESP module would work better for me at this stage.

The advantage of using a CC2530 with an ESP : You can put it anywhere you want, and there is no need to re-pair.

thanks again! I’ll be digging into it tonight. Re-pairing is not my favorite part of z2m so if it is not need i’m all in

Did you find Zigbee2Mqtt in the Add-on Store? I think this is an excellent project, but it is not in my Add-on store (neither in officials add-ons nor in community add-ons). Why is that? Is it a problem with my installation or is it just not in the store?

If it is not in the store:
-why is this excellent project not there? zwave2mqtt is int the store…
-how do I install it easily in HASS.io?

Thanks!

Mouser also sell the CC1352P-2. Since it is over 50 bucks they ship for free, so in the end cheaper than the CC26X2, but better. I will get one.

If you add the repository https://github.com/danielwelch/hassio-zigbee2mqtt, you will see the add-on.

Thanks that works. New to HASS.io. Used HA as a standalone docker before.
