With the Shelly in-wall stuff getting AUS certification, you might be better off with the Clipsal switches you mentioned and Shelly devices in wall. I would imagine the price difference will be significant, and I find WiFi plugs and switches to be more reliable than Zigbee.

I have over 150 devices on my network and any issues are caused by firmware on zigbee coordinator or HA/add ons.

Exactly - an update to HA or the Coordinator can take down 150 devices, not a good position to be in.

I recently updated the zigbee2mqtt add-on and lost my network, had to re-pair my 10 devices, mostly sensors. Not many, but it was still very annoying.

On the other hand 150 device wifi network just won’t work unless you have multiple AP’s and different channels on each AP. Then your neighbours WiFi network cause interference because you are using all the available 2.4GHz channels.

By the way a zigbee update has never taken sown my network, just caused some issues.

I have about 80 devices on my WiFi, using 1 Ubiquiti AP-AC Lite. Never had a network issue, can stream 4k Netflix over WiFi and network is rock solid with about 8 neighboring networks in range.

I have been wanting to get another of the same AP ‘just because’, but have no real need for it. A network with 150 devices would most likely need a 2nd AP.

I’m not saying WiFi is bulletproof, I’ve personally just found it more reliable than Zigbee. Each to their own.

Is the Shelly 1 (the one certified in AUS), able to be used as a dimmer? Or is it simply on/off?

Anytime I had issues with ZigBee was when Z2M updated and the container just failed to start.

Since I have switched to deconz, I haven’t had a single issue.

I’ve not used them myself, so can’t comment on how they work, but they make a specific dimmer which is being sold in Aus HERE. Might be worth getting in contact with them and asking if they can send you the certification for it, if it is Aus certified.

The same seller also sells the Shelly1 and Shelly1 PM, and has links for the certification.

Shelly1 is on/off.

Fibaro z-wave pucks all the way with clispal iconic bell press mechanisms. Stick with zigbee for the sensors, but z-wave for light switching.

hey guys, looking to add some more colour lights around the house. I normally use Philips Hue lights, but thinking of finding something cheaper and flashing Tasmota on them. Seems everything I’m looking at is a newer firmware that tuya-convert can’t flash.

Does anyone know of any lights available now that I can flash? Looking for E27 lights. I’ve tried the Arlec Grid Connect GLD122HA but it’s too new. Also, the BrilliantSmart 20698 is too new too.

How does using DIN-rail relays and dimmers / PLC stack up, price-wise? Extra cabling cost running lighting cables back to a central location (vs stringing) and cost of distribution box etc, but savings on not having to run load-carrying wiring to wall-plates for switching, let alone including a neutral. You then have the option of including HA gear at the distribution box with low-voltage wiring to control the relays/dimmers, and can convert to simple wall-switch operations if selling.

Given the price of labour maybe it wouldn’t make much difference cost-wise, but it would give you centralised control over the lighting which might make it a lot easier to change how things are set up in future. I don’t know if there are regulatory issues with that.

(edit: this sort of setup seems fairly common in small apartments in Europe, without any smarts at all)

Keep in mind the Shelly 1 also needs a neutral wire. The Shelly Dimmer 2 doesn’t require neutral but don’t think it’s Aus certified.

I personally find zigbee much more reliable than wifi for smart devices, but I know others would disagree :slight_smile:

As long as the load is greater than 10 watts or you purchase the dummy load.

I’ve had good success with MorningStar and Midnight charge controllers. Both have a network port and I’ve been able to get date out of each using ModBus.

SP Pro is a bit of a pain. No easy connectivity out of the box. I wish they’d add a network port and provide a ModBus or REST API to talk the their inverters.

PS: We are off-grid which is why we have separate charge controllers and inverter :slight_smile:

add to the bad experience with Nue switches, hum, fail, unreliable.

Anyone used these?

I’d prefer Zigbee, but I’m not keen on what I’m reading about the Nue ones. These are unfortunately twice the price, but at least whether its 1/2/3/4 gang its practically the same $$. I can’t seem to find any discussion on them at all, even on the other Home Automation forums.

This has been my experience too.

So it’s think my options are:

  1. Clipsal iconic bell press switches with Stitchy’s to control the lights supplied by the builders.
  2. Clipsal iconic bell presa switches with Shelly 1’s - though I lose the ability to dim
  3. Clipsal iconic bell press switches and Supply Philips hue downlights in place of the standard LED downlights
  4. Bell press switches with. Fibaro (or some other z-wave based) puck

Ideally, I’d prefer to use ZigBee rather than introduce another protocol to my home ecosystem.

I guess I’ll weigh up the costs of everything above and go from there.
