This is my Google Home Hub that gets a Home Assistant dashboard casted to it.
Tonight I have realised that the below image is what I am shown with the background not black as it should be it’s like got confused as the cards show black as they should be.
Hub was set to auto as it has been since setup over 18 months ago so it casts between light and dark dashboards during the day depending on the light levels it receives no automation or anything for this just something it does which is great. I have now set it Dark mode manually within the Google Home app and am still getting this issue. Setting it manually to Light mode casts as expected with a white background and white cards.
However as this is next to my bed the dark mode is pretty critical for a good nights rest.
Little bit stumped on how to resolve. Have even tried setting a dark background on that dashboard as a temporary fix to darken it however that wallpaper doesn’t seem to want to push onto the cast either but not as fussed over that at the moment.
Have already tried manually setting the frontend.set_theme to Dark with no success in it working. Something clearing not quite right as you can see especially as the text is displaying as I would expect it to in white if it was in dark mode so it seems the main issue here for whatever reason is the background is like stuck on white which produced this weird issue.
As far as I can remember it was working last night and I haven’t changed any config etc at all today so unsure why the random issue. Have also tried the obvious of restarting the hub too and re-casting the dashboard multiples times. Have also tried other dashboard and get the same issue.
Weirdly, I woke up to exactly the same thing on my two Nest hubs this morning.
Have tried all the tips I could find (triggering set_theme, changing Hub from dark to light and back again, deleting and re-adding cast integration) and nothing has worked so far.
I did the HA upgrade to 2025.1 yesterday, I wonder if that’s related? Or maybe the Nest hubs updated themselves overnight? Mine are both on version
System firmware version: 22.20240805.103.161
Cast firmware: 3.75.446835
Same issue, but only occurring on my Chromecast Ultra, not either of my Google Home Hubs.
I want everything black, 100% of the time, and it has been this way for over a year, but as of today noticed the white background. Cant force it regardless of settings.
Same here. Issue started with one Google Chromecast Ultra, and spread to others over a day or so.
Hadn’t changed anything in home assistant.
Dashboard in home assistant has black background and changing theme to dark does nothing when casting.
Seems to be related to an update on Google’s side…?
I was starting to think may be 25.1 causing the issue but that doesn’t make sense considering timelines etc and not everyone here is running it and still experiencing issues.
My Google Home Hub:
System firmware version: 22.20240805.103.161
Cast firmware: 3.75.446835
Don’t know if I’m looking too far into this but the 2024 in the firmware version does make me wonder if this hasn’t been updated since last year which would rule that theory out but any thoughts from anyone else?
Same here also got the same issue this morning no better. Do we need to raise this to Devs? First time I’ve experienced an issue like this so unsure how we go about trying to resolve???
Yes given it’s impacting a bunch of us, I think raising an issue at Issues · home-assistant/core · GitHub with the integration:cast label so the bot pings the maintainer is the way to go.
Interesting but my hesitance with that is it didn’t seem to be an immediate change after the update the first night after the update for me was fine and as someone mentioned earlier in the thread they are still on 24.12 which annoyingly kills that theory. So there doesn’t look like an easy fix.
I noticed that mine stopped working yesterday. I have automations that show the dashboards in the morning and in the evening (different dashboards, different devices).
Yesterday morning’s dashboard was fine (0700 GMT), but the evening one had a white background (~2200GMT), so something likely changed around then.
It’s 100% worth raising an issue on GitHub. I think someone said they also had many errors in their logs. I don’t have any in mine, but it would be good to be able to provide those.
Amazing thank you was just about to do it. Hopefully can be fixed quickly. Have just seen 2025.1.1 has just been released. Anyone updated and checked yet if this resolves it?
