Home Assistant OS (HAOS) with Proxmox VE 8.0 Install Guide

There is something SERIOUSLY wrong with the VM I wound up with using this guide. Even though I only allocate it 6GiB of ram, the actual RAM usage of the VM grows uncontrolled, until all 32GiB of RAM on the host are used, and the host OOM killer kills the VM.

I posted the details of the behavior over at Single KVM process consuming all RAM, triggering OOM | Proxmox Support Forum, but so far all I’ve gotten is confirmation that something is wrong with the VM…

Try this guide.

Sounds like Proxmox bug to me. The scripts in the guide just build a normal Linux VM.

It’s up…should be working.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking, thus the reason I posted the details over on the proxmox support forum. That said, I did go ahead and re-create the VM manually (which is quite easy, BTW), so we’ll see if that fixes anything.

The script is almost certainly fine, it’s just something about when I ran it caused me to end up with a broken VM. Probably one of those one-off really weird and inexplicable issues I seem to be really good at running into  I only mention it because a second VM set up with a generic Debian install is working fine - it’s only the VM that was set up with the script that is having issues, for what that’s worth.

Hello, I would like to move the HomeAssistant installation, all configs, addons, HACs, etc. from Raspberry Pi 4 Supervised, made by tutorial from Guide: How to install Home Assistant supervised on Rpi4 with RaspiOS (64 bit) - October 2022, to Proxmox installation. The installation in Proxmox is “clean”, and implemented according to this guide. I tried using a backup from the Raspbian version during the first run of the Proxmox installation, but it grinded indefinitely and ultimately seemed to kill the restoration process. I tried copying over SSH (the image shows that the contents of the /usr/share/hassio directory on Raspberry Pi roughly corresponds to the structure of the main directory on the Proxmox installation, although there are more JSON files there), but I couldn’t raise the permissions enough to be able to replace some of these files. How to do it so that it works?

Did you check out my restore guide for tips?

Since you are using Proxmox, it’s easy to monitor disk/CPU to “tell” when the restore should be done.

Great guide, thank you. Everything was well described and absolutely no errors encountered.

Thanks for the awesome guide! It made setting up Proxmox VE 8.0 with Home Assistant OS super easy. Your step-by-step instructions, especially for configuring storage and setting up the HAOS VM, were spot on. This guide is a gem for anyone looking to get HAOS running smoothly on Proxmox. Thanks for sharing your expertise! And don’t forget to change your ring doorbell’s chime if you got one.

You are welcome!

Thanks for the great manual. I managed to install HaOS on my proxmox without an issue. The only thing is that it was version 12.4, but now version 13.0 is already out. When I tried to check for updates from the UI, it said no updates available. Then I ran update from the console and it worked.
I am relatively new to HA and ProxMox, so might be missing something. Could you please advise?

It should have worked, but the ova of 13.0 has been cancelled due to problems in virtual machines.

here planning to move my rpi installation to proxmox (cause I want Nextcloud AIO, some dockers running and freak with proxmox all that I can). I will tell you how was the migration! Thank you for the post!

UPDATE: turns out this was the solution … I had to remove the (two) failed disks

DEPRECATED:
Just installed proxmox VE 8.2 today (since it’s all the rage with the kids apparently) and the first VM I’m trying to play with is HA of course since there is this script here…however when I run it, it bombs out :frowning: I see above some issues, but wondering if this is a known issue and is there a work-around or do I just wait for a new version of the script? I tried both “default” and “advanced” (as per article) a few times and reboots but it is always the same error…

Thank you very much. Am switching to Proxmox after an ESXI crash. This is working wonderfully.

Apologies for jumping in with a question but didn’t want to start a whole new thread in case this was an easy fix…so here goes

I had been running Proxmox 7 and all was good…no issues at all…

Upgraded to Proxmox 8 a while back and whilst normal usage is totally fine, I now have an issue where when I take a snapshot of the HASS VM, the whole system (HASS) locks up and the way to get it back up and running is to instantly rollback to said snapshot and then all is working as it should.

This definitely never happened with Proxmox 7…so I am wondering if I have done something wrong when upgrading the system…or if there is a new switch that needs to be ticked that I am not aware of.

Let’s be honest, this is a 1st world problem and adds 60 -90- seconds into my process but it would be nice if it worked as it used to every time

Thanks in advance

Because I want more than one integration running of 1 specific integration, I am thinking of running a second HA in a vm ( somebody told me, I am not that clever).

Is that an option ?

It is an option, however be aware not all devices can be shared between instances.

I have to try. otherwise it is an extra module of a 1000 euro’s
