No web interface, no ssh on new install

SSH is not enabled by default. The web interface should be. To what address are you browsing?

I’m trying to get to the DHCP issued address on port 8123

http://192.168.10.17:8123

As per the curl request above during troubleshooting

Have you tried using a web browser?

lol, yes. I was trying from command line to troubleshoot.

Now getting this after installing Home Assistant via DietPi (at least I can SSH into OS now):

I don’t know why SSH isn’t enabled by default on the official image but just found this in the HA logs on DietPi:

Are you running DietPi and trying to install the HA image?

I am using the DietPi menu to install HA because the official image doesn’t have SSH which didn’t allow me to find the issue which I have now resolved.

It does - in the add-on store.

So, are you just doing a Core install now, or trying to run Supervised?

So the issue for me was a failed install of Pillow 7.2.0 which I only found by looking at the HA logs on the DietPi install as the official image doesn’t have SSH enabled.

Issue was with prerequisites on Pillow 7.2.0, namely:

The headers or library files could not be found for jpeg,
a required dependency when compiling Pillow from source.
homeassistant@DietPi:~$ python3 -m pip install --upgrade Pillow

And then:

homeassistant@DietPi:~$ pip3.8 install pillow==7.2.0

Add on store is no help if you’re doing a headless install on a Raspberry Pi with its stupid micro HDMI cable that you don’t own.

You could follow this guide and have Supervised running with the add-on store

Yeah, I could have done that but I had assumed that SSH would have been available…

SSH was switched off by default because it was a security risk. Less technically minded people were installing Home Assistant (with SSH enabled) and their router’s UPnP service was exposing it publicly.

EDIT: actually that was SMB shares with guest access.

I’d suggest that the “Less technically minded people” are the security risk, but anyway… I can only assume the official SD card image was failing due to Pillow 7.2.0 as well, is there any work around for this for headless installs or do I need to order a micro HDMI cable so that I can log on locally and fix it?

The missing dependency is an issue with v0.115 it will likely be fixed with a dot release soon.

True but that seems to be the target demographic now.

Again - no help for headless install users if you can’t SSH to fix the dependency issues.

Pillow wasn’t the problem with your “headless” install. That python package is already installed in the underlying Docker container (I just checked what’s in the container). If you’re able to go with a Docker install that too would have worked fine - plus as you’re running it on the OS you’d have been able to identify any issues more easily.

Core installs are, by definition, up to you to identify and resolve missing libraries.

As to what was the problem with your original install, you could set up debugging access to HassOS - which is just SSH on a non-standard port. That config is imported at boot time, so in theory you don’t even need a working install (I say in theory since I don’t use that install method and can’t confirm).

So I re-flashed the SD with the official HA Raspberry Pi image and enabled debug. Seems it can’t access version.home-assistant.io

Internet is fine

# ping version.home-assistant.io
version.home-assistant.io is alive!
#

So 14 hours later I can make another reply to my topic. I found the issue to be time related. HA wouldn’t get time from the default CloudFlare servers and as a result the CA root certs weren’t valid. I changed to my router NTP server and restarted timesyncd and everything worked.

Sounds like a bug in the OS - could you open an issue about that please - I’m pretty sure you’re not the first to have that problem, and some sane fallback would be good IMO.

Hi @ilium007, I have the same symptoms as you, ping to version.home-assistant.io is also alive from my side… Fresh install, using Pi 4, HassOS 64 Bit image. I’ve been hours stuck with this. The initial webUI won’t show up.
