Add option for switching places of target and current temperature in the new climate cards

The new climate cards in 2023.12.0 look nice, however the usability got worse in my opinion.

I don’t really get why the target temperature is displayed big, and the current temperature is shown as tiny bellow it. In my opinion it should be the other way around (as it was in previous releases).

Most people have schedules setup for heating, you usually know what your target temperature is. What I’m interested in is the current temperature, so how far am I off from the target. Previously I could scroll through all my thermostats and see that quickly. Now it is much more difficult, since it’s so tiny, and the target temperature is so huge.

Furthermore, when the thermostat is turned off, it just looks weird and misleading. It shows the “Target” label. It doesn’t show the target temperature since the thermostat is off. And then it shows the current temperature bellow it. So it actually seems as the current temperature is the target.

Ok, maybe someone has a different opinion, but could you please then make this configurable, so we can swap places of these

Agreed. I just updated my HASS installation, saw the new card, and immediately started searching for other people who had the same problem. The current temp should be large and the setting(s) small, like it used to be, or at least it should be configurable. Actually considering rolling back until it’s fixed.

Good to hear that I’m not the only one complaining

For me this make no sense whatsoever. I don’t care about the target temperature. My main thermostats are on a schedule, I know what the target is, and it doesn’t change. Don’t see the point of having that in focus.

And I have a bunch of TRVs that I basically just switch on and off, since they can’t control the main heating anyway. So they are either Off or 30. When I initially saw a bunch of 30s I thought that I’ll either bankrupt or that the house was on fire

In my opinion, even if it was configurable, the other way around should be the default, so it displays it like that on the autogenerated dashboard as well. If (for whatever reason) you want to focus on the target temperature, configure it in a custom dashboard. I really don’t see many reasons where the target temperature would be more relevant than the current temperature.

I have quite some thermostats (for each room) and this alone is stopping me from updating atm. Or till someone makes an alternative that is as clean.
But i’d rather stay as stock as possible.

Totally agree.
This is not how it should be.
When i pass my dashboard i wanna see in a blink of an eye the current temperature.
As you said the target temperature is mostly configured in a schedule.
Hope they will here our prays

Same here. I have 2 main thermostats and 12 TRVs, so this change is really killing productivity.

As for an alternative GitHub - KartoffelToby/better-thermostat-ui-card: a custom card for a better thermostat in home assistant based on better_thermostat intigration has this configurable, although I haven’t tried it myself.

I tried it. I prefer the stock card, less this new change of flipping the set temp(s) and actual temp. There weren’t any alternatives in HACS that I liked over the stock card.

Finally created an account just to mention this, the new thermostat card makes absolutely no sense. I don’t know whose idea it was but it’s bad. As people mentionned, the current temperature should be BIG in the center, not the target.

The standard in thermostats of many brands seems to be that the big number is the current temperature. At least when it is not being changed, some thermostats do show the set temperature big when you are changing it, but change back to the big=current temp after a short while.

It is unexpected to deviate from what seems to be standard in thermostat land.

Just adding my vote on this. Please revert or give the option to choose the larger text.

Agreed - my vote also for big number current temperature. It should be the default - but at least as an option…

hm… I can see why many people want to have the “current temperature” shown as the main information - and I can also agree with this, when I see some of the screenshots here - because on those, it is really hard to tell…

what I don’t get at the moment, where the differences are comming from.

HEATING - In automatic mode → Current temperature is highlighted

HEATING - In heating mode → Current temperature is highlighted

IDLE - in automatic mode → no highlights… the “Target” Temperature is the information my thermostat is showing on the display…
grafik

I have to note here:
The devices I am using are HomematicIP Thermostats on my radiators.
So they just show the target temperature I’ve set the thermostat to … This is why I personally don’t see a big issue with the current layout… but I can understand the people who are using wall-thermostats, etc. that do show the CURRENT temperature.

I am not sure, if it will confuse others if the design will now be changed to show the current temp as the main information… Personally, I wasn’t a fan of the old thermostat card at all - and have banned it from my dashboard… I was using custom thermostat cards instead, such as “simple thermostat card” - which also always showed the target temperature as main information…

So for me, this is just “common” and I am used to it… but that’s “just me”…
Anyway - this got my vote

The thing is, your eyes are attracted to the biggest number first. So when you want to quickly check the temperatures it takes a bit of effort to refocus to the smallest numbers even if they are highlighted. I have about 10 thermostats and it’s become highly impractical.

Only 35 requests ??? :smirk:

I agree with this!

I have the thermostat card on my wall display. I want to be able to quickly see what the temperature is from a few feet away.

If I’m adjusting the temperature I will be at the display, so those numbers should be smaller.

It just makes sense to have them the other way around.

The new card is now totally “over-engineered”. I can no longer see the wood for the trees. As for why the set temperature takes precedence over the actual temperature is a mystery. This sort of issue usually emerges in over-sized organisations where the designers work in isolation from the users, in a committee environment which tries to satisfy everyone and ends up with a lowest common denominator solution which pleases no-one. Most HA developments to date have been amazing and very positive. Sadly, this is not one of them.

Agree with previous comments about this change.

I, like another poster, have many room level thermostats over two floors - 13 in total. I’ve been using this now for many months here at home and it’s been great and a pleasure to use.

Whilst I really do appreciate all the efforts that have gone into this redesign, I also would like to have the option to use the old design or at least, the same layout/theme.

The way information is conveyed in the original UI is just perfect. It’s pleasant on the eye and allows you to very quickly see state across multiple rooms - it’s the perfect balance of information and control!

I really like the flame and power buttons that the original design uses. They are spot on - just the foreground colour change to reflect state is enough here.

The new flat stretched feature buttons take up so much space. They are extremely distracting on my dashboard that has 5-8 thermostats on the page. The amount of orange/grey background on the buttons is overwhelming - when it’s just the orange on the heating ring and flame button, that’s so much more intuitive and visually more accessible to understand the current state.

I have rolled back (for the first time) to the previous version, as I really do prefer the old card.

It would be great to have the option to select the classic design please - thanks for your consideration team!

Fully agree. The new look is misleading.
Especially when it is turned off.
