WTH are sidebar configurations not stored at the server level?

There are a lot of sidebar WTH comments, but I didn’t see this one - I have to reconfigure my sidebar order and visibility once a month or so, and it drives me nuts. I am assuming it is stored as a cookie. Why can it not be stored directly and permanently in HA and applied to all clients?

Similar but not enough to be called a duplicate: WTH Set dark theme as default on web browser

Purging a browser’s cache very often & using this method.

And the sidebar is different depending if you are connected via the internal (wifi) or external (mobile data) URL - so annoying!

I agree - there should be a way to configure a default sidebar - this drives me nuts.

Related potential WTH — why can’t color be set at a server level?

it is? Do you mean theme?

In an ideal world yes but in the current implementation are primary and accent color part of the theme?

(And WTH is there no alternative theme included out of the box so I could easily see what it changes?)

In that regard, you can set this at a server level and via an automation through themes.

FYI There are already a plethora of Theme oriented WTHs that cover many other aspects as well.

The order is stored in the browser’s localStorage (as well as the hidden items).

Until this is provided natively by Home Assistant you can use this as an alternative.

I have lost count of the number of times I’ve had to edit the sidebar to remove Energy (I don’t have any sensors that provide that info), Todos (I use OmniFocus) and Media (I don’t use HA to control media). After reordering what’s left, it’s a lot of fiddling.

So it’s particularly annoying to find that something has caused HA to reset to defaults, both when running as a Vivaldi PWA on my Mac and when running the iOS app on my iPhone.

Does this really have to be stored in such a brittle location? Could I not go in to my profile and at least set what the defaults should be, so if I set up a new device, or my current one loses its customisations, HA will use my defaults rather than someone else’s?

Is something like a mask for each dashboard possible for limiting the sidebar choices for access by temporary guests?
I have not worked with Kiosk mode so I don’t know the limitations.
A limited sidebar set up by the HA Admin would keep things more secure and prevent unnecessary areas from being selected and tampered with.
It’s like “Welcome to my automated home… sorry I can’t offer you a Dashboard because you could mess things up”.
