Would it be possible to get more units for “gas” ?
“Gas” basically could be seen as a far more generic “Heating” with more units to be allowed.
seems to be demanded by some… but probably nobody cares that there is not only gas in the world…
I would not mind using gas to heat my house, but it is just not available in my street. I’m therefore on heating oil and have a connected gauge to measure the remaining quantity in my tank.
Thanks to that, I have built sensors and counters to monitor my consumption and to transform it in kWh to have it appear in the Energy dashboard as… gas consumption, because oil is not available
Right now, the energy dashboard does only provide some basic options for your energy monitoring.

Right now, I do see one major issue with this kind of setup:
GAS is the only option that can be setup for “heating”
IN fact, there are other options, such as GAS or even electricity.
Measurements can be made for Oil (there are sensors available which measure the fill level of an oil tank)

We don’t have gas, but Kerosene. I’ve converted my current consumption (currently litres per day) into m3 (10.35 kilowatts per litre is the official conversion) and fed it into a utility sensor, which works great. It would be real nice if we could rename Gas to Oil for completeness.

as the Energy Dashboard is a very nice thing to display and analyze energy consumption it would be nice to introduce something like “custom consumptions”.
Like for example the Gas consumption is something which is more related to urban areas rather than country side it would be nice to set custom energy names and units like “wood pellets [kg/pound]”. It also would give us the possibility to create consumptions for water [liter/gallon], oil [liter/gallon] and anything else which comes …

I really like the approach developped on energy dashboard (thank you for that) but I think it should be more “inclusive” for alternative energies.
I am thinking first to wood and pellets consumption on which I have already some meters (that could be easyly converted to KWh).
For people like me that are mixing different energies bringing more flexibility in defining additional sources like we have for consumptions wold be great.
Maybe yes, but I think the whole point of the Energy dashboard is expenses (costs) management.
We have support for electrical energy and gas.
Gas can be used to produce energy, so does pellet, coal, wood, and other sources, but we don’t have support for all of them.
I think that support for water usage would be a nice addition. I’ll create a feature request and we can discuss that in the proper place.
I propose that the Energy Dashboard gets more flexibility regarding energy sources, right now its very focused on solar.

The whole home energy management subsystem needs lot of improvements, it is based on several hardcoded assumptions instead of being flexible and customizable as everything else in Home Assistant.
Some attention from the team is needed here, this is a great feature which now looks like just a proof of concept which never got the development it deserves.
