Solution (Workaround) for Zigbee/ZHA devices stuck in "Interview Complete. Configuring."

I want to share with you a little accidental observation, that made it possible for me to pair Zigbee devices that would otherwise be stuck in the state of Interview Complete
Configuring....

To reach that state I set my device (here a frient FLSZB-110 water sensor) into pairing mode, click Add Device in Home Assistant and wake the device regularly using the wake-up/factory-reset button. The device already leaves pairing mode and considers itself paired. But Home ZHA doesn’t. The device did not yet appear in the devices, yet.

If at this stage, I reload the ZHA integration, the devices appear and everything works great. The configuration is also applied so I have all entities that belong to my devices.

The reload is doing something that should happen in the Add Device workflow. But yeah. Here’s that. I hope someone stumbles over this, as I did not find anything and always got pointed to the “Make sure you have a solid mesh or a full battery” posts which are very good but didn’t get me here.

Cheers!

This is a great find. It should help a lot of people because I hear this a lot.
I changed this to a Community guide and I added it to the Cookbook in the Zigbee section.

Thanks for the Awesome contribution to the Community.

Thank you for this! I was stuck trying to pair a Hue SML001 motion sensor, but this tip fixed it.

Thanks.
I ordered Tuya ZigBee Smart Door Window Sensor from aliexpress and just couldn’t get past configuration part. But when keeping the sensor awake by pressing the pairing button while the device was still connecting to home assistant everything worked.

Hi all,

I’m in the same ballpark; my flszb-110 while found en reviewed (but never succeeded) never come into my ZHA integration

Also reboot the integration (Sonoff dongle pnpkus v2) wont help.
What do i wrong?

Great finding… I was starting to be upset by my son off zigged device

Oh wow this just saved me while trying to configure my Hue Motion Sensor. Thank you!!

This helped me out with a stubborn battery powered Zigbee device. Thank you!

Also got stuck when trying to pair a battery powered Zigbee device and then found your workaround here. Thanks for sharing it with us!

Came here looking for a solution to this, wasn’t disappointed.
Thank you.

Reload the ZHA integration when stuck somewhere during pairing new devices… you saved my day!

I never would have thought of this, but it worked like a charm for 2 outdoor plugs I was struggling with to get installed.

Thank you!

Thanks! helped me with some stubborn IKEA devices

Hi all! I am fighting for HOURS with an ikea water sensor and an ikea door sensor.
I use sonoff P but there is no way I can make both work.

I remove everything, delete zigbee database, restart multiple times and now and then one of the two works great…
The second simply NO WAY and the fun part is that sometimes the water sensor works, sometimes the door sensor.

How can I get out of this pain?
Is there any suggested procedure for ikea devices?
Should I hold the pair button or not?

Restarting the integration, as suggested, won’t help because the device becomes connected but won’t update status or battery level.

I am going insane.

I fought a long and hard fight.
I tried anything, really.

What worked - I think but I am unsure - was disconnecting the Sonoff P from usb, connecting it and searching the ikea door sensor and water leakage sensor right away.

No clue, honest.
But once it works it seems pretty solid!

I had the same issue with a Sonoff TRVZB that wouldn’t complete its configuration cycle. This solution worked for me, thank you.

I started using HA only about 2 mo. ago, and therefore had to add a huge number of devices in the first couple of days and even some weeks later (as I bought more than half a dozen of Zigbee sockets afterwards), so I had this issue frequently. I basically discovered a similar work-around – for me, often “force-reloading” the dashboard did the trick (“Shift-Reload” in the browser).

It’s obvious for me that there must be some “quirk” inside HA that sometimes prevents proper setup of newly added devices.

(This is only one of several annoyances I have with HA so far… I would love to help solve or at least further investigate this if I knew how to do it…)

(I hope this doesn’t get across as not being thankful for what we get for free…)

Since SmartThings changed their integration pairing (to 24hrs) I am finally moving everything to native. (50+ devices between Zwave and Zigbee)

I’ve been having a similar symptom and stumbled upon this solution too, but not repeatable for myself for every device.

I ‘think’ full restart does more than a quick reload. But cannot tell.

Thanks a lot for sharing this! I was going nuts here.

It is generally a good idea to short press the pairing button every 1-2 seconds when trying to pair a battery device on any of the 3 zigbee integrations HA supports. Some battery devices tend to go into “sleep mode” even during the pairing process so might not be correctly recognised.

I tend to try pairing once, and if the battery device does not pair well or reports issues, I try the interview process once again while keeping the device awake every few seconds

Thanks, this worked for me as well. I have to re-pair every time I change the batteries in my IKEA motion sensor. That usually hasn’t been a big deal but this time it got stuck in interview complete as described here.
